Thomas Guterbock

Thomas M. Guterbock, founding director of CSR, received extensive training in quantitative, multivariate methods and has applied these in CSR research, publications and his applied work.In his role for the Center, he originated and implemented numerous studies involving complex sampling, complex questionnaire protocols, or complex analysis strategies.

Tom moved to Charlottesville from Chicago over 40 years ago. He studied at Yale and received a PhD in Sociology from the University of Chicago. In March of 2017, he received the John M. Kennedy Achievement Award from the Association of Academic Survey Research Organizations for career achievement and contributions to the field of survey research. He retired and was elected professor emeritus of sociology in 2023.
