2024 HSLP: Day 6

High School Leaders Program Class of 2024
Day 6: Thursday, July 18th
Reported by: Aviva Fierst, Fredericksburg Academy, and Aiyana Thornton, Harrisonburg High School

The high school leaders started out their day with a session from the Young African Leadership Initiative where they learned about the importance of Mandela day. They were able to create lasting connections with African leaders from all different countries. Some of which included Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Kenya. They then had focus groups sessions about their culminating policy projects where they were able to hear from other leaders in the program surrounding their progress. To end the day they had class with Mrs. Meg Huebeck where they learned the history of political parties in Virginia, found out how civics can be taught in music, and heard from a guest speaker about a few different political research resources. The high school leaders ended their night with a fun energetic karaoke night.
