2024 HSLP: Day 1
High School Leaders Program Class of 2024
Day 1: Saturday, July 13
Reported By: Blake Aguilar, Orange Country High School and Lena Wilson, Alexandria City High School
Excitement and eagerness filled the air on the first day of the Sorensen Institute program. Today, students arrived on Grounds for the HSLP at noon to begin the two week program. After moving into their dorms, students were led on a tour of Grounds, exploring the wonders of UVA. Students then said a bittersweet goodbye to their families and met in the Tuttle-Dunnington dorm for orientation. During orientation, students discussed the importance of being nonpartisan at the program through a group activity by listing words that described the different political parties as well as gaining an understanding of the rules. Students also got to know and interact with each other through a game of Bingo. Today's lessons promoted a feeling of sincerity and teamwork between classmates, which was followed by a delicious dinner. After an introduction full of information and fun, the students headed back to the dorm lounge to enjoy some ice cream before resting up for a big day at the ropes course the following morning. The first day was greeted with enthusiasm and confidence, laying a positive groundwork for the days ahead.
